MHD (continuous process)
The IKA MHD (Mixing, Homogenising, Dispersing) 2000 system is designed for mixing solids (powders, granules) and liquids. The system is mainly used in a continuous process. The MHD machine is ideal for processes that must meet at least one of the following requirements:

Work with minimal energy costs
The need for mechanical grinding of granular raw materials
Minimum amount of air inclusions
and also if the liquid phase has a high viscosity or the miscible phases react immediately after their connection.
The MHD 2000 machine is equipped with two horizontal connections for liquid inlet/outlet and one vertical connection for solids. The liquid is fed into the machine under pressure, usually using a piston pump. The liquid is then distributed concentrically in the injection chamber and injected through a plurality of holes into the pre-mixing chamber. The solids are fed through a vertical connection into the pre-mixing chamber using a gravimetric or volumetric dosing device. The dry feed section and the wetted liquid phase are separated from each other by a feeding screw. The proportionally dosed liquid and dry phases are combined in the pre-mixing chamber and then immediately dispersed with high shear force by a rotor-stator mechanism, which ensures the production of a high-quality product without the formation of agglomerates in a single pass. The finished product is discharged from the machine by gravity through a side discharge opening located at the bottom of the working chamber.
This unique method completely eliminates aeration, which is a common side effect of introducing bulk solids into a liquid phase using devices operating on the Venturi principle.
The performance of an MHD system can be influenced by adjusting the dosing devices. The amount of energy introduced into the system, and therefore the degree of dispersion, depends on the rotation speed and the configuration of the selected mixing tool. For mixing tasks that allow for small deviations in the content of the components, a volumetric dosing method is usually sufficient. For fully continuous processes that require a high level of accuracy, dosing pumps with quantitative control are used for the delivery of liquids and differential dosing scales for solids. In this case, the dosing error is absorbed in 0.5%.
The IKA product range includes eight different sizes of the MHD 2000 with capacities ranging from 60 to 40,000 l/h. All machines operate at the same rotor speed, which ensures reliable scaling when transferring technologies from the laboratory to production.
